The best Meghalaya itinerary is less about how many places you can cross out and more about how much time you have to get on the roads between those places. In four days, you can easily do Shillong and Sohra (Cherrapunji). In six days, you can add in Dawki and Mawlynnong and in eight days, you can take it slow with the Nongriat trek, Double Decker Living Root Bridge and all that.
Guwahati is the main entry point for most first time visitors into the state and route through Shillong to the villages of Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong. The itinerary experience is varied in these places-Shillong is for the urban city culture, Sohra for scenic waterfalls and caves, Dawki for the crystal clear Umngot River and Nongriat for the living root bridges of Meghalaya.
You have the option of doing them independently or taking a Meghalaya tour package which includes hotel, transfers and sightseeing. Here you will find ready-made 4, 6 and 8-day itineraries, Meghalaya honeymoon itinerary, approximate budget calculations, hotel recommendations and tips on opting for a package or self-planned trip.
4-Day Meghalaya Itinerary (Shillong + Cherrapunji)
For a 4-day Meghalaya itinerary, it’s recommended to limit to 2 bases: Shillong and Sohra. If a dawnie is included too, it will turn the itinerary into a demanding road trip.
Day 1: Arrival + Shillong
Most travelers will enter Meghalaya via Guwahati, then take a road transfer to Shillong. The journey takes about half a day (depending on the traffic, weather and your time of arrival).
Once you have checked into your Shillong hotel, spend your first day relaxing. If you have time, walk over to Ward’s Lake after checking in, wander about the city centre or walk around Police Bazaar.
If you have spare time, just add a viewpoint near the location. It is not worth wasting your precious time by rushing through several attractions just after a flight or train trip.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 2: Shillong Sightseeing
Start early and cover Shillong’s main attractions in a practical circuit:
- Shillong Peak for panoramic city views
- Elephant Falls for a short waterfall stop
- Don Bosco Museum for regional culture and heritage
- Ward’s Lake for a relaxed walk
- Police Bazaar for shopping and dinner
These can easily be seen in one day and avoid attractions which are spread out and require a lot of travel. Shillong Peak is 10km out of the city and due to its proximity to an Indian Air Force station certain visitor facilities have restrictions in place so see what’s needed before visiting.
For additional planning, see our things to do in Shillong and Shillong travel guide resources.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunji/Sohra
Depart Shillong after breakfast heading for Sohra. The drive is usually a 2-3 hour trip but sightseeing stops and traffic can extend the journey considerably.
A sensible Cherrapunji itinerary for this day could include:
- Mawkdok Dympep Valley viewpoint
- Mawsmai Cave
- Nohkalikai Falls viewpoint
- Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint, when visibility permits
Don’t rush around visiting every waterfall and cave. Choose two or three most important waterfalls or caves and ensure you reach your rest house before evening.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 4: Cherrapunji + Return/Departure
Return to Sohra for 1 or 2 attractions you would have missed on Day 3. If you are heading back to Guwahati for a flight/train, get out early enough to allow for your departure buffer.
Same day transfer to Guwahati is feasible but sightseeing till the time of your flight is not a good idea. Road travel should take priority over squeezing in one last viewpoint.
Overnight: Guwahati or onward destination.
Quick 4-Day Itinerary
| Day | Route | Main Attractions | Overnight Stay |
| 1 | Guwahati → Shillong | Ward’s Lake, Police Bazaar | Shillong |
| 2 | Shillong | Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Don Bosco Museum | Shillong |
| 3 | Shillong → Sohra | Mawkdok, Mawsmai Cave, Nohkalikai | Sohra |
| 4 | Sohra → Guwahati | Morning sightseeing, departure | — |
Who should choose the 4-day itinerary?
Opt for this when doing a brief first trip to Meghalaya, particularly if travelling with family, taking only limited leave, or would rather avoid too many long driving days. Provides you a taste of the Shillong-Sohra experience without it feeling like a list of things to check off.
6-Day Meghalaya Itinerary (Dawki & Mawlynnong)
If you have six days you can have a better Meghalaya travel itinerary which covers more places apart fromShillong and Sohra. Six days give you enough scope for taking Dawki and Mawlynnong in your plan. Day 5 in your plan should still start early.
Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong
Guwahati to Shillong; arrive in Shillong, check in to the hotel, and relax for the evening in the center of Shillong.
Leave the day open if you’re arriving late-it’s always possible you will arrive later than planned.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 2: Shillong Sightseeing
Visit Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Ward’s Lake, Don Bosco Museum. Save the Police Bazaar for the evening.
If Laitlum Canyon is the main focus, then replace it with one of these other stops rather than trying to cram it into an already busy day – it is about 25 km from Shillong and best considered as a separate trip when you have time for the view-point and local scenery.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunji/Sohra
Drive to Sohra and take the path to the story for viewpoints, waterfalls and caves. Some circumspect stops are more drudgingly than knocking to crush every place to visit in Cherrapunji.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 4: Cherrapunji/Sohra Sightseeing
Give Sohra a whole sightseeing day. You can opt for waterfalls, caves, viewpoints etc as per weather and your interest
Make the evening free instead of wasting time sightseeing. Two nights in Sohra makes this Meghalaya trip plan much more comfortable.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 5: Dawki + Mawlynnong
Start early for the Dawki–Mawlynnong circuit.
Enjoy the Umngot River at Dawki. You may go boating if the weather and the river conditions are appropriate and when local operation time allows boating. However, the Dawki area borders with the India-Bangladesh border, visitors are strongly advised to stay in the designated visitor areas and adhere to local instruction strictly.
Next go to Mawlynnong, where you will have time to walk through the village, see the Nohwet Living Root Bridge and visit the Sky Viewpoint if you still have time. According to Meghalaya Tourism, Mawlynnong can be reached by private vehicle, shared cab and by tour packages from Shillong.
Please don’t look at Dawki and Mawlynnong as two separate whole-day trips in this trip plan. They are paired together, but there is a lot of driving on this day.
According to the aforesaid notice, the Meghalaya Government has asked visitors journeying to Dawki and other tourist spots near to this village to take the Shillong-Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki route as an alternative.
You are advised to confirm the current government advisory before embarking on your journey as circumstances of the route may change.
For detailed planning, see our Dawki & Mawlynnong Travel Guide
Overnight: Mawlynnong/Dawki region or Shillong, depending on your departure plan.
Day 6: Return/Departure
If returning to Guwahati, leave early and keep a generous buffer for your flight or train.
Quick 6-Day Itinerary
| Day | Destination | Key Experiences | Overnight Stay |
| 1 | Guwahati → Shillong | Transfer, evening exploration | Shillong |
| 2 | Shillong | Peak, falls, museum, lake | Shillong |
| 3 | Shillong → Sohra | Viewpoints, caves, waterfalls | Sohra |
| 4 | Sohra | Full-day sightseeing | Sohra |
| 5 | Dawki + Mawlynnong | Umngot River, village, root bridge | Region/Shillong |
| 6 | Return | Transfer to Guwahati/next destination | — |
Who should choose the 6-day itinerary?
This would be the best all-round choice for first time visitors, couples, families and smaller groups. This would get you the main sights without too punishing a walk.
8-Day Meghalaya Itinerary (Root Bridges Trek)
If you are more inclined towards nature, trekking and village experiences, an 8-day Meghalaya itinerary then allows enough time to include Nongriat comfortably.
Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong
Transfer to Shillong and spend a relaxed evening after check-in.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 2: Shillong Sightseeing
Do Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Don Bosco Museum and Ward’s Lake. Leave the evening for the Police Bazaar.
Overnight: Shillong.
Day 3: Shillong to Cherrapunji/Sohra
Travel to Sohra with some points of interest enroute. Don’t over pack the day as the next day’s sightseeing and trek to day 5 will need lots of energy.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 4: Cherrapunji/Sohra Sightseeing
Devote a whole day to locations like waterfalls, cavesand viewpoints in Sohra. Walk carefully according to requirement by weather and visibility.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 5: Nongriat / Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek
The treks begin from very close to Sohra village, at a place called Tyrna. The best option is to drive from Sohra to Tyrna village. Meghalaya Tourism websites state that it is about a 30-45 minutes drive from Sohra to Tyrna by taxi.
The trail consists of a long, steep downhill section and the ascent back up. The tourism-related sites all state about 3,000 steps down-another website, Meghalaya Tourism, states the entire descent as about 3,500 steps (estimate).
Allow most of the day for the experience, particularly if you continue towards Rainbow Falls.
Carry:
- Shoes with strong grip
- Plenty of drinking water
- Light snacks
- Rain protection
- Quick-drying clothes
- Small backpack rather than heavy luggage
Anything can be slippery if wet. Meghalaya Tourism advises the use of anti slip footwear and problems should be discussed with staff prior to trekking.
It is quite strenuous for those trekkers not used to physical activity and who have weak knees or other mobility problems. Can be too much for elderly travellers and families with small children and should not be considered a ‘walk to see the sights’. Meghalaya Tourism recommends that a local guide/experienced companion who knows the route be employed.
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is the highlight of this trek, but the journey is a part of the journey. Save some daylight and energy for your return to Tyrna.
Overnight: Sohra or Nongriat, depending on your chosen trekking arrangement.
Day 6: Cherrapunji + Nearby Attractions
Post-trek slow down, head to one or two of the attractions close by that you missed in the morning, or simply relax in the morning to await a short afternoon sightseeing.
Overnight: Sohra.
Day 7: Dawki + Mawlynnong
Begin early and proceed towards Dawki and Mawlynnong. Also see Umngot River and boating if possible then proceed to Mawlynnong to see the village and living root bridge.
Having eight days, you could make this day less frantic than the six-day model.
Overnight: Dawki/Mawlynnong region or Shillong.
Day 8: Return/Departure
Begin your onward journey early. Do not plan a big attraction for the morning of departure when flying out from Guwahati.
Quick 8-Day Itinerary
| Day | Route | Main Experiences | Overnight Stay |
| 1 | Guwahati → Shillong | Arrival, local exploration | Shillong |
| 2 | Shillong | City sightseeing | Shillong |
| 3 | Shillong → Sohra | Viewpoints, waterfalls, caves | Sohra |
| 4 | Sohra | Full-day sightseeing | Sohra |
| 5 | Sohra → Tyrna → Nongriat | Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek | Sohra/Nongriat |
| 6 | Sohra | Recovery + nearby attractions | Sohra |
| 7 | Sohra → Dawki → Mawlynnong | Umngot River, village, root bridge | Region/Shillong |
| 8 | Return | Departure | — |
Who should choose the 8-day itinerary?
For trekking, waterfalls, villages and more relaxed travelling instead of just ticking off the main sights, pick 8 days. This is especially good for energetic travellers, photographers and groups happy with long walking days.
Meghalaya for Honeymooners — Best Spots for Couples
Meghalaya is an excellent couple trip as its attractions are naturally suited for viewing scenic drives, tranquil view points, nature camps and relaxed days.
Best Meghalaya Honeymoon Destinations

Cherrapunji/Sohra — 2 nights: Combine waterfalls, caves and viewpoints with a scenic cottage or resort-2 nights allows for not moving the base too often.
Dawki/Umngot River — 1 day: Perfect for a beautiful drive and river trip. May be available when the river is suitable.
Mawlynnong — 1 day or 1 night: A good option for couples walking through villages and staying in living root bridges. Homestays and cottages are great if you are looking for a more relaxed stay.
Laitlum Canyon — half to one day: 25 km from Shillong, Laitlum is suitable for couples looking for viewpoints, photography and a more slow-paced outdoor activity.
Other romantic moments involve the scenic waterfall stops, scenic road trips, cosy cafes, nature loving touches in your accommodation as well as the quiet evenings at the resorts/cottages.

Budget Breakdown
Meghalaya travel cost is seasonal, class of hotel, class of vehicle, number of persons and time of booking. The following ranges are for planning purposes only for land travel only and do not include flights and trains to Guwahati.
| Travel Style | Approx. Daily Cost per Person | Suitable For |
| Budget | ₹1,800–₹3,000 | Backpackers, budget travellers |
| Mid-range | ₹3,500–₹6,000 | Couples, families, small groups |
| Premium | ₹7,000–₹12,000+ | Honeymooners, comfort-focused travellers |
This is a guide to standard accommodation, food and sightseeing costs. Private cab expenses will need to be estimated on its own – a vehicle for four people will be considerably less than one for a pair.
Estimated 4/6/8-Day Meghalaya Trip Budget
| Trip Length | Budget | Mid-Range | Premium |
| 4 days | ₹8,000–₹13,000 | ₹15,000–₹25,000 | ₹28,000–₹45,000+ |
| 6 days | ₹11,000–₹18,000 | ₹22,000–₹36,000 | ₹42,000–₹70,000+ |
| 8 days | ₹15,000–₹24,000 | ₹28,000–₹48,000 | ₹55,000–₹90,000+ |
Budget accommodation and transport should be the focus for budget travellers. Where possible stay in homestays and travel by shared transport. Mid-range travellers should blend equal measures of comfortable Meghalaya hotels with a private shared cab. For premium travellers private vehicles and better resorts in addition to upgraded room types should be factored in.
Other costs including other boating and watersports plus costs relating to trekking etc. Can be additional and should be checked locally before booking.
Meghalaya Tour Package vs Planning Your Own Trip
A Meghalaya package tour is easier if you prefer all the arrangements to be taken care of by one company – hotels, transfers and sightseeing. Independent travel means that you can choose your own hotels and how much time you spend at each attraction.
| Factor | Meghalaya Tour Package | Independent Trip |
| Convenience | High | Moderate |
| Flexibility | Moderate | High |
| Transport | Usually arranged | Self-arranged |
| Accommodation | Usually bundled | Fully flexible |
| Cost control | Depends on inclusions | Higher control |
| Best for | Families, couples, first-timers | Flexible travellers, groups |
For families, honeymooners and first time visitors, a Meghalaya package makes sense if they don’t want the hassle of trying to fit together various cab routes.
Before booking a Meghalaya trip package, confirm whether the quotation includes:
- Accommodation and room category
- Airport/railway transfers
- Private cab, driver and fuel
- Parking and applicable local charges
- Meals
- Sightseeing
- Boating or other activities
- Trek-related expenses
- Any required permits or entry charges
Always compare inclusions rather than the advertised starting price.
How Many Days Are Enough for Meghalaya?
4 days: Best for Shillong and Sohra highlights.
6 days: The best balanced Meghalaya travel plan for most first-time visitors.
8 days: Best for Nongriat, the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, villages and slower exploration.
For couples, six days is generally most feasible. Families can opt for 4 to 6 days depending on age of children and tolerance for driving. Active travellers would opt for 8 days.
Practical Tips for Planning a Meghalaya Itinerary
- Best time: Meghalaya Tourism suggests either October to April for the best weather and sights or July to September to take advantage of the heavy monsoon and verdant scenery.

- Road travel: Build in buffer time for all inter-city transfers. Present route advisories may affect the Dawki journey.
- Start early: Particularly important for Dawki–Mawlynnong and Nongriat.
- Cash: Consider bringing some cash along for smaller businesses and remote locations that may not accept credit/debit cards.
- Book ahead: Meghalaya Tourism recommends advance accommodation booking during busy periods.
- Cab planning: A private vehicle is useful for families and groups; confirm exactly what the quoted fare covers.
- Trekking: Use proper footwear, water, snacks and rain protection.
- Responsible tourism: Respect village customs, avoid littering and follow local guidance.
- Do not overpack: Fewer attractions with sensible travel time usually produce a better Meghalaya trip itinerary.
